CFN LEARN TO SKATE WITH WONG

Newcomer youth, ages 6-15, are encouraged to join these free ice skating lessons that will teach them the foundational skills needed to participate in one of Canada’s favourite past times! Join Centre for Newcomers and Learn to Skate Wong, funded by the Calgary Flames Foundation, for 4 on-ice lessons from May 28-June 17 at the Don Hartman Sportsplex.

No prior ice skating experience is required. Skates & helmets will be provided free of charge to clients who meet the criteria.

FURNITURE DESIGN

JULY 5, 12, 19, 26, 2023

Newcomer youth or children of newcomers, ages 12+

Join us to learn how to design and paint your own oval rocker chair designed by Andrew Doxtator. Oval Rocker is comprised of 4 identically shaped oval components with varying slots to form a rocking chair when assembled.

 

Provided Materials: Plywood, oils, acrylic paint, and gold leaf

 

Benefits of furniture design: All components are already cut from a standard 4’x8’ sheet of plywood and do not require any hardware for assembly. Each week you will design each oval part by drawing and painting it using mixed media. By the end of the 4 weeks of the program, you will assemble your oval rocker chair and have the opportunity to showcase it to Centre for Newcomers!

Join the Centre for Newcomers and local artist, Apiow Akwai, for an introduction into painting through weekly lessons.
 

Youth will have an opportunity to learn different painting styles, how to use and care for equipment, and the steps to plan and design their own projects.
 

All first- and second-generation newcomer youth are welcome.

ETHNICITY CATERING

EMPLOYMENT TRAINING PROGRAM

EthniCity Catering and Café is a non-profit social enterprise at the Centre for Newcomers that provides paid Canadian work experience and training for immigrants and refugees. It provides 10-12 weeks of online and in-person training. Trainees gain hands-on experience in a commercial kitchen, improve communication skills and increase customer service understanding during the program.

 

Our training registration and information sessions are ongoing.

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

This workshop program equips refugee and newcomer clients with the knowledge and skills to recognize and cultivate healthy relationships while identifying and navigating unhealthy dynamics. By addressing the unique challenges refugees face in establishing social connections and fostering supportive relationships in their new communities, this training aims to empower individuals with the tools to build and sustain healthy connections.

 

Key objectives include:

 

  • Recognizing healthy relationship dynamics

  • Identifying unhealthy relationship patterns

  • Seeking support and resources

 

Refugee and newcomer, vulnerable clients can develop the necessary tools to foster healthy relationships, enhance their well-being, and promote social integration in their new communities.

LEARN LACROSSE!

Lacrosse is the oldest organized sport in North America, created by the Haudenosaunee, or Iroquois, people way back in 1100 AD! Played with a lacrosse stick and ball (shown above) the game and skills develop coordination like fine-motor skills and hand-eye coordination, while also teaching discipline, teamwork, and the power of practice. Of course, it's also a physical workout, getting players moving, running, and improving cardiovascular health.

 

Come on out and make some new friends while learning this team sport with great instructors!

BALLET LESSONS

Ballet is an art form created by the movement of the human body. Through dancing, participants learn to tell a story, share a thought, or connect with an emotion.

 

Ballet has so many benefits! It can improve posture, build muscle and agility, improve flexibility, improve sensory skills and learning abilities, develop persistence and problem solving, and help build confidence. It is a great workout that releases "happy hormones" to destress and help with concentration and focus. Not to mention it is a great opportunity to meet new friends! So come on out and get that creative movement flowing

What is Kayaking?

A Kayak is a small boat-like craft that requires a double-bladed paddle to move through the water.  Instructors will guide you through the basics

 

Kayaking is a low-impact activity that can improve your aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility. There are also other benefits like reduced stress levels, boosted mood and boosted self-confidence. It can even improve your focus, improve thinking skills and memory, and might even help with better sleep quality.

 

Families, and parent(s)/guardian(s) are welcome to register together. Children must be 10 years or older to participate.
