COMMUNITY DIALOGUE

The Centre for Newcomers Indigenous Education Program (IEFN) invites you to participate in a series of community dialogues running October 16th , 2020 though April 9th, 2021. This series of gatherings will help guide the creation of content for Indigenous and Newcomer education opportunities today and for 7 generations yet to come.

COMING OUT IN A
CULTURAL CONTEXT
January - March 2021
This workshop teaches concepts about coming out, outing, safety issues, and how they interact with cultural and other contexts for newcomers to Canada. It gives specific ways to discuss coming out within a cultural context and relates openness to sexual orientation or gender identity to privilege, culture, religion, and resiliency. It refers to UNHCR Guidelines for working with LGBTQ+ refugees and the use of interview skills to discuss coming out scenarios.

MENTAL HEALTH
SUPPORT THROUGH PEER SUPPORT FOR LGBTQ+ NEWCOMERS
February - March 2021
This workshop is dedicated to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of LGBTQ+ newcomers through peer support. This workshop will begin by exploring the meaning of mental health and peer support, as well as the specific benefits of peer support. Participants will learn the ethics and guidelines of peer support, as well as be given the opportunity to practice finding similarities with service users and peers, as well as utilizing active listening skills.

This program provides comprehensive and personalized services to EI recipients in Calgary and area for re-entry into the workforce. Clients may receive specialized technical training, childcare support and workers' benefits (WCB) while attending the program. GENDER IDENTITY & EXPRESSION, SEXUAL & ROMANTIC ORIENTATION
January - March 2021
Join CFN for a workshop exploring gender identity and expression, as well as sexual and romantic orientation. The intersecting and unique experiences of gender and sexually diverse individuals through Western and global perspectives will be highlighted. Participants will have the opportunity to review inclusive terminology as well as the protection of sexual orientation, gender identities, and expressions.
The workshop will create an inclusive and respectful environment for participants to identify and work through challenging scenarios that they or their organizations may be facing.

Would you like to learn and practice computer skills? We offer free computer literacy classes at the Centre for Newcomers. Content includes an introduction to computers, keyboarding, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. These classes are open to all - refugees, immigrants and citizens of Canada. DISCOVERING OUR DIFFERENCES: AN EXPLORATION OF DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

Join CFN for an introductory workshop dedicated to educating individuals about concepts related to diversity, inclusion, and psychological safety. Throughout this workshop, participants will examine concepts of privilege, oppression, and social location. Participants will gain introductory knowledge to assess discrimination and personal responsibilities in creating safer spaces.

NAVIGATING GENDER

Join us in navigating gender and sexual diversity in faith communities through a panel discussion with Pam Rocker, Keith Murray and Safa Rahman!
