CFN's Receives $2.73 Million from Provincial Government to support Alberta Trades Sector

Alberta’s skilled trades are building the future — and the Centre for Newcomers is ready to help build it.

CFN's Trades Ready Training for Newcomers (TRT) program provides short-term, employment-focused training, industry-recognized safety certificates, and job-search skills for newcomers interested in entering Alberta’s skilled trades.

The Centre for Newcomers is incredibly grateful to the Government of Alberta for their generous investment of more than $2.73 million in CFN’s TRT program, delivered in partnership with the Edmonton Newcomers Centre. This is more than a program, it’s an economic driver: TRT fuels workforce development, strengthens communities, and supports Alberta’s economic growth by empowering individuals to launch rewarding careers in the skilled trades.

Program Offers:

• Hands on introductory training in selected trade occupations aligned with labour market demand, including exposure to tools, equipment, and basic trade techniques

• Essential workforce and employability skills training

• Industry recognized safety certifications (e.g., CSTS, WHMIS, First Aid and CPR, Fall Protection, and other relevant safety training)

• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and training material

• Job Search and Placement Support

• Direct connection to employers, networking and hiring events

• Ongoing follow-up support to help with job retention

Eligibility:

• Permanent Residents

• Convention Refugees

• Naturalized Canadian CitizensSelf-identify as one or more: Newcomer, 2SLGBTQI+, Indigenous, Black Canadian, Woman, Racialized person, Person with disabilities.

Participants should:

• be 18 years of age or older

• have CLB 5 or higher

• be legally entitled to work in Canada

• demonstrate motivation to pursue employment in the trades sector
