The United Nations has proclaimed 2026 as the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development (IVY 2026) to celebrate the power of volunteerism in driving the 2030 Agenda, fostering community resilience, and strengthening global solidarity; themed "Every Contribution Matters" and officially launching on December 5, 2025, IVY 2026 aims to recognize and promote both formal and informal volunteering as crucial to creating inclusive, sustainable societies, focusing on rebuilding volunteer infrastructure, strengthening civic participation, and highlighting volunteer contributions to climate action, poverty eradication, and social inclusion, while national initiatives like Canada’s "Ignite Volunteerism" seek to reconnect citizens with their communities and elevate the visibility of volunteer impact.
Today we highlight CFN Volunteer Laila Nazari.
1. Why did you choose to look for a volunteer opportunity?
I wanted to give back and involved in the community, when I first came here,I saw how important support can be ,So I felt like volunteering was a good way to to help others while also pushing myself to grow.
2. What do you gain personally from being a volunteer?
Volunteering make me feel more connected and gives me a sense of purpose. I have also gained confidence, improved myself communication skills, and met a lot of great people along the way.
3. Why is volunteering important for the City of Calgary as a whole?
I think volunteering helps bring people together and make the city stronger. It creates a more welcoming environment, especially for newcomers, and helps build a sense of community.
4. Why did you choose to volunteer at the Centre for Newcomers?
I choose the centre for Newcomers because I can relate to the people support.As someone who has gone through the experience of being new in a country, I wanted to be part something that helps others feel more comfortable and supported. I myself also get the experience of Canada.
5. Tell us little bit about yourself - where are you from? Where do you live? What are your interests, hobbies, activities etc.?
I am originally from Afghanistan and currently live in Canada. I am graduated from high school. I was a daycare teacher in back home. I know three languages Dari , English, and Urdu. Now I am studying level one to get the certificate and also upgrading my English.

Most of the time when I open a discussion, I can tell pretty quickly whether it's worth reading.
