1. Why did you choose to look for a volunteer opportunity?

I chose to look for a volunteer opportunity because I want to give back to the community, help others, and make a positive difference. I also hope to learn new skills, meet new people, and contribute my time and experience to support the community.

2. What do you gain personally from being a volunteer?

I gain a sense of purpose and fulfillment from helping others and contributing to my community. Volunteering also gives me the opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people, build my confidence, and gain valuable experience. Most importantly, it makes me happy to know that my time and effort can make a positive difference in someone’s life.

3. Why is volunteering important for the City of Calgary as a whole?

Volunteering is important to the City of Calgary because it brings people together and helps build stronger, safer, and more connected communities. Volunteers support community programs, events, parks, and services while giving their time and skills to help others. I believe volunteering also creates a sense of belonging and makes Calgary a more welcoming and caring place for everyone.

4. Why did you choose to volunteer at the Centre for Newcomers?

I chose to volunteer at the Centre for Newcomers because I want to help newcomers feel welcome, supported, and connected to the Calgary community. I appreciate the Centre’s work in helping immigrants and refugees with settlement, employment, language, and community support. I would like to give my time, help others, learn from different cultures, and make a positive contribution to the community.

5. Tell us little bit about yourself - where are you from? Where do you live? What are your interests, hobbies, activities etc.?

I am originally from Eritrea and grew up in Sudan. I graduated with a degree in radiology from Alzaiem Alazhari University in Khartoum. I currently live in Cranston, Calgary, and I am interested in meeting people, staying active, and contributing to my community.
