Screening of Ángeles FC at CFN: a Powerful Documentary from the CJFF justREEL Series

The Centre for Newcomers invites you to attend a Calgary Justice Film Festival (CJFF) justREEL Community Screening, in partnership with the Consulate of Mexico in Calgary and Calgary Wild FC, of Ángles FC. Ángeles FC, directed by Roberto Ortiz, is a powerful documentary about transformation, accountability, and community through the creation of a youth and women’s soccer team in Mexico.
Before the screening, enjoy wonderful music, cultural performances, and dancers, along with authentic Mexican food available for purchase — delicious! This will be a vibrant and engaging evening celebrating film, culture, and the social impact of sport.
Following the film, stay for an engaging fireside chat with Evelyn Vera Barreto, Consul General of the Consulate of Mexico in Calgary; Farkhunda Muhtaj, captain of the Afghanistan Women’s National Team and Calgary Wild FC player; and Rowan Fisher, Executive Director of CJFF, as they explore how sport can transform lives, strengthen communities, and create pathways for inclusion across borders.

Evelyn Vera Barreto is the Consul General of Mexico for Alberta and Saskatchewan and a career diplomat with extensive experience in migration, international cooperation, and community engagement. Her work has focused on strengthening connections between communities and supporting Mexicans abroad. She has also contributed to initiatives that advance gender equality and cultural exchange, reflecting her commitment to inclusive and collaborative international relationships.

Farkhunda Muhtaj is a professional footballer and captain of the Afghanistan Women’s National Team. She was the first player named to the Calgary Wild FC roster. A social activist and humanitarian, she uses sport, education, and advocacy to support refugees and promote inclusion, including co-founding initiatives that support Afghan youth and newcomers in Canada.

Rowan Fisher is Executive Director of the Calgary Justice Film Festival, a former Director of Programs at the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association, and a former managing lawyer. She is a recognized leader in human rights and access to justice, with experience across legal practice, governance, and community leadership. Through CJFF, she works with partners to create film- and dialogue-based programming that advances justice-focused storytelling and cultural engagement.
