Unity over discord, hope over despair, and love over hate must be the only reaction to poltical violence

Last Sunday in Calgary, a vigil was held for Charlie Kirk, the U.S.-based conservative activist who was shot during a public event at Utah Valley University on September 10th.

Violence is never acceptable. Freedom of speech is a fundamental part of our democracy, and that opposing ideas are a vital part of a healthy society. Above all, beginning conversations with those who are different from us, can lead to fostering understanding and respect. And even if it does not, debate, and even contentious debate at that, is an integral part of the democratic process.

In our current political climate, we seem to find ourselves at a collective crossroads, grappling with grief, anger, and division. Such a senseless act of violence underscores the urgent need for unity and compassion in these divisive times. We must remember that beneath our differing political views, cultural backgrounds, and personal beliefs, we all share a common humanity. It is in moments of crisis that our true character is revealed—whether we choose to stand divided or come together as one.

Society today is marked by polarization, where misinformation and hostility often overshadow dialogue and understanding. This divisiveness weakens the fabric of our society, making it easier to justify hatred and violence. Yet, it is precisely during these dark moments that we are called to rise above our differences and prioritize empathy, kindness, and reconciliation. We must reject the rhetoric that fuels hatred and embrace the values that unite us: respect, tolerance, and a genuine desire to heal wounds.

Unity does not mean uniformity but rather a collective commitment to work through our differences with civility and compassion. It means listening more than we speak, seeking common ground rather than playing into conflict. Leaders and citizens alike have a responsibility to foster an environment of peace and understanding. Only by standing together — regardless of political or ideological divides — can we honour the memory of those lost and build a stronger, more resilient society.

It is our collective duty to choose unity over discord, hope over despair, and love over hate. In doing so, we can create a future where justice, peace, and mutual respect prevail.
