June is Refugee Awareness month. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), released data in June of 2025 that stated over 122 million people—one in every 67 individuals globally—are forcibly displaced. This number has double in only the last 10 years. Then, as it is today, Canada is seen around the world as a beacon of hope in their journey toward safety. Every time there is a worldwide crisis, we see people arriving in Calgary with hope in their back pocket.
Today we highlight once such story - Canadian Keinan Abdi Warsame
Keinan Abdi Warsame, known professionally as K’naan, was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, on June 22, 1978. As a teenager he witnessed the outbreak of the Somali civil war; in 1991 his family fled the violence and eventually resettled in Toronto, Canada. That experience — displacement, loss, and the struggle to belong — became the foundation of his art.
Early career and breakthrough In Toronto K’naan found hip hop and poetry as tools to process his past and speak for people with similar stories. He released his breakthrough studio album, The Dusty Foot Philosopher, in 2005. The record blended Somali melodies, reggae and hip hop and earned critical praise for its vivid storytelling and social commentary. The album’s success established K’naan as a distinctive voice in both Canadian and international music scenes.
From April 1, 2023 to December 2025, CFN has helped more than 10,000 refugees.

"Wavin’ Flag" and global recognition K’naan’s 2009 album Troubadour brought him worldwide attention via the song “Wavin’ Flag.” Originally a reflective anthem about resilience and freedom, the track was later adapted as a celebratory promotional version for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, exposing K’naan’s music to a vast global audience. The song has since been covered and remixed widely and remains his best known single.
Other works and collaborations Across his albums and EPs, K’naan has continued to fuse autobiographical lyrics with broader political and humanitarian themes. He has collaborated with diverse artists across genres, appeared on festival stages worldwide, and contributed songs to film and television soundtracks. His writing often shifts between intimate portraiture and calls for social justice, rooted in the refugee and immigrant experiences that shaped him.
“Growing up, every time someone called me a refugee, I recoiled. I wanted to flip the meaning of the word and make it something that people will wear proudly.” - K’naan
Advocacy and humanitarian work K’naan has been vocal about refugee issues and humanitarian causes. He has worked with organizations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and supported programs that use sport and arts to help displaced youth. His public profile and personal story helped draw attention to global refugee crises and to the contributions refugees make in their new communities.
Legacy K’naan’s music is notable for combining memoir and activism: it tells his story as a Somali refugee in Canada while amplifying the lives of others affected by conflict and displacement. From street performances in Toronto to stages and airwaves around the world, he turned a personal journey of survival into art that resonates across borders and generations.
“It takes both courage and desperation to abandon your home for somewhere unfamiliar.” - K'naan
